Abstract
This study is a descriptive survey to research and investigate the correlation of MBTI personality types with ways of managing job stress and levels of job satisfaction of visiting nurses working at a public health care center. This survey was carried out on 70 visiting nurses from 8 cities, 10 counties, and the province of Gyeongsang-Nam in the Republic of Korea. Data was collected between September 2, 2016 and October 30, 2016 by using a structured self-reporting questionnaire. The data analysis was performed utilizing the t-test and the one-way ANOVA. The results indicated that job stress was somewhat high, with a score of 59.04 out of a possible 100 points. As for stress coping, according to the MBTI personality types, the Intuition (N) personality type used total stress coping (t=-2.84, p=0.006), problem-focused (t=-2.25, p=0.028), social support seeking (t=-2.16, p=0.034) and wishful thinking (t=-2.27, p=0.027) as methods of stress coping more than the Sensing (S) personality type. Job satisfaction of participants from this study showed a negative relationship (r=-.402, p=0.001) with job stress, the higher the job satisfaction, the lower the job stress. Based on this research, as there are differences in the ways visiting nurses cope with job stress depending on their MBTI personality type, matching stress coping strategies to personality types is required in order to be effective. Furthermore, an intervention of an efficient stress coping style for stress relief and management should be considered critical to increasing job satisfaction and decreasing job stress.
